Following Dot International week, I thought it would be "BEEFITTING" to give credit to another of Peter H. Reynolds books.... Playing For the Heart. Reynolds creates a heart filled story of a young boy who has a gift of tone that allows him to play the piano with no formal training. In an effort to help his young son develop his gift, his father provides him with a teacher and lessons. The lessons, however, take the joy out of the young pianist gift. The more he practices, and greater his skills the less he wants to play. The young boy as he grows, plays less and less. As an adult, he no longer plays. One day his father becomes ill. As soon as the boy arrives at his father's side the father requests him to play. The song that brought the most joy to the father and the son was not one of a famous composer, but the song the son had played from his heart. The story gives so many lessons of encouragement for young people to strive to be creative and find joy in their art. Many writing prompts given by teachers are used from stories with heart.... Playing For the Heart will definitely be the book that many teachers can use with heart.
