This week Bashful Book Bee has a sweet little book that pulls characterization, social studies, science, and heart stories all into one.  The book is “Hurry and the Monarch” by Antoine O’ Flatharta.  Hurry and the Monarch has been around awhile but I know has often been overlooked.  Hurry, an old turtle, meets a migrating Monarch. Hurry learns from the Monarch about the migration of Monarch Butterflies from Canada to Mexico.  Hurry, who has always lived in Texas, cannot imagine any life but his little garden in Wichita Falls.  Teachers can use this book to show the various distances between Texas towns, as well as the geography from Canada to Mexico.  The story goes on to share with readers the stages of metamorphosis in the life of a butterfly.  The watercolor artwork gives visual beauty to the Monarchs as well as the age of the old turtle.
